Good morning, everyone. Did you have a restful night’s sleep? If not, then perhaps today’s What I’m Loving may help!
After moving a few years ago, we needed a new mattress for a guest bedroom. We didn’t think much of it, ordered something from a local department store, and it arrived by truck a few weeks later. It turns out, we should have done some research, because it was terrible! It was hard as a rock, with springs that squeaked if you so much as rolled from your side to your back.
Then the mattress boom begins, and there are mail order mattresses everywhere you look! They all claim to keep you cool and provide a restful slumber at the end of every couple’s busy day. Not to mention the fact that they can be shipped to your house overnight, you can test them for 100 days and they guarantee satisfaction or a return.
So, when we were again shopping for a mattress just a year or two after the aforementioned experience, I buckled down and did my research. This mattress was for our master bedroom, and I did not want to make the same mistake I had with the other purchase. Like everyone reaching middle age, we have our aches and pains, and a bad mattress can really exacerbate them. And I felt that it was important to consider the materials and chemicals in our mattress if we were to be sleeping on it for one third of our lives for the next 7-10 years. I was also willing to make an investment, but not spend as much as a car.
What I found was a wealth of information, but very little of it seemed reputable. I literally spent weeks of my lunch breaks combing through articles, websites and stores featuring mattresses that claimed to be “clean” and comfortable, but then realizing that they were mostly marketing gimmicks. As I think I’ve mentioned before, I take shopping very seriously. Rather than go down a very, very long wormhole about mattresses on this blog, I will share with you the result of my diligent research.
We bought the Queen Natural Escape from My Green Mattress. It is covered with GOTS certified (yes, this is a legitimate certification) organic cotton, GOTS organic wool sourced humanely (a natural flame retardant) and Organic Dunlop Latex. According to www.mygreenmattress.com, it is their number one mattress for adults. While the firmness is necessary, we did add a very plush mattress topper to add a bit of extra “sink” when you first get in bed. With this combination of plush and firm, the Natural Escape has been perfect for us.
Fast forward six months, and we needed another for one of our kids. Having done this extensive research and with some personal experience to boot, we quickly ordered the Pure Echo in a full size. Though the website says that this is technically a firmer mattress, it feels less-so to me than my Natural Escape. It’s also not a latex mattress, so it may be a better fit if you suffer from such allergies. It’s also a really good price at under $1,000. The newer Kiwi mattress was not available when we purchased this one, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on that one too.
I cannot say enough about the quality of the mattresses from this company. They arrive quickly and are boxed beautifully. There is no smell (known as off-gassing in the mattress blog world) when you open them for the first time. They have both held up well for over 18 months, and look brand new. When we opened ours, the mattress tag (you know the ones with the serious legal language?) even indicated that it had been produced just days before shipping, as opposed to sitting in some warehouse for months.
The customer service is also impeccable. I had a question for them when I opened the first mattress, and they wrote back to me within the hour, at 8 p.m. in the evening! They are located in the U.S. near Chicago, and you can visit their showroom if you live nearby. They offer a generous return or exchange policy within 120 days. In addition, they almost always offer a $100 discount near big retail holidays. So, if you are in the market, I’d hold off until this Labor Day to see if they have a weekend sale.
If you’re interested in doing a little research, here’s some information about their mattress certifications and the story behind this company.
I’ve been sharing this company with friends and family for the past couple years, and I’m excited to share with you now too! I hope you can avoid the overwhelming mattress selection out there, and feel confident in a healthy, affordable comfortable mattress.
