Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid is not only a love story, but a historical literary novel that takes place during the 1980s NASA Space Shuttle program. The main character, Joan Goodwin, is an astronomy professor and selected to train as an astronaut at NASA at a time when women are still underrepresented in STEM professions. Joan, quiet and highly intelligent, undergoes the physical, emotional and mental demands of the training. Throughout the process, she forms close relationships with the other astronaut candidates and a deeper understanding of who she is and what she wants.
This is the best book I read in 2025. I especially enjoyed the author's character development. Joan’s internal journey is remarkable. She arrives at NASA as a reserved and measured professional, and transforms into a skilled and inspiring character who displays vulnerability. Joan, and all of the astronaut candidates, play an important role in the story that touches on the cost of professional ambition, gender inequity, social justice, love and relationships.
Atmosphere is a fast-paced science fiction novel that will leave readers wanting to turn the page (or continue to listen) for hours. The story is an emotional journey that brings the audience through the historical significance of the NASA Space program, women's representation at such a time, but also the personal stories that are captivating and gut-wrenching. I listened to this book and it was gripping from start to finish. The last minutes of the book were breathtakingly beautiful!
