Every few years, I reread Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. It's my favorite novel, and I never get tired of the story, the characters or the use of language. This year, around the beginning of June, I picked it up once again. And after I finished, I wanted to continue down the Austen road.

I started with a very loose Pride and Prejudice adaption. It's both modern and based on Indian American professionals in California, but it adheres to some of the same themes from the original. Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev was a really enjoyable story told from the perspective of a "proud" young female neurosurgeon, Dr. Trisha Raje, and an assumptive male chef, DJ Caine. Since there were new storylines and additional characters, it was fun to read in close proximity to the original.

I'm now in the midst of Sense & Sensibility and plan to follow with another adaptation. Maybe I'll continue with the Rajes family and read Sonali's adaptation Incense and Ability.

Later this summer, I'm planning to watch some of the movie variations of each of these classic books. It's been a fun way to focus my reading this summer with some old and some new stories.

Perhaps I'll make it an annual tradition with themed reading in future seasons! What themes would make for good fall or winter book selections?
