Tuesday Morning Tidy: 12 Months of Tidy - Basement Part 2

Writer's picture: FayFay

Continuing my 12 Months of Tidy project, I'm back with the second and final update on our basement. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I'm tackling each space using three key steps to guide the process over the course of one month:

  1. Serious clear, clean and repair.

  2. Assess how we use the space for making improvements.

  3. Identify ways to maintain it more easily going forward.

In the previous post, I covered number 1: Clear, Clean and Repair. Today I'll share my experiences with improving and maintaining the space.

Assess for Improvements

This space is used with increasing frequency. As our kids get older, they have friends over and we all use the gym more. While everything functions pretty well, I wanted to make sure it felt as inviting and comfortable as the rest of the house.

In the room we have designated for TV and relaxing, it still felt a bit "basementy." While it's decorated and the furniture is comfortable, we knew a rug would make it cozier on top of the vinyl floor. With tools and sawdust nearby and the unfortunate basement reality of bugs from time to time, we also knew it needed to be easy to clean. I decided to grab a rug from Ruggable during their early January sale so I could have a machine washable option! This is the one I purchased:

It's made relaxing in the basement feel less like a cold afterthought, and more like a cozy den.

I also added extra towels to the gym so we could swap them out more frequently with the heavier usage it gets during the colder months.

Maintenance

Towards the end of each month's tidy, I'd like to think through how to properly maintain and stock each space with everything it needs for the foreseeable future. Maybe I won't have to give this space much attention at all in the coming year because it will be functioning at its best!

In order to maintain the order we've brought to the storage part of the basement, I created a drop zone using an extra bookcase we are storing in the area. I instructed my kids (and will do this myself too!) to place any items they'd like to store in this area on these shelves. We can periodically go through the items and put them in the appropriate storage containers. I'm hoping this prevents the regular dumping of junk in the nearest clear space.

Finally, I stocked up on a variety of products that we need or use regularly down here, things such as air filters and some basic emergency supplies.

The basement was a really large undertaking for month one, but I thought the new year momentum would help get through it. Next month's space will be about as different as it gets. Stay tuned!
