And I'm back with another month dedicated to the kitchen! The kitchen is absolutely the hardest working room in the house, and at 35 years old, it needs regular maintenance. This is the time of year when we have people over, make lots of food, and want our kitchen to look and function at its best! `
As a reminder, here is my process for assessing each space:
Clear, clean and repair. Identify any materials needed in advance to make this possible.
Assess how we use the space for making improvements.
Identify ways to maintain it more easily going forward.
First, my supplies need to be assembled:
trash bags
cleaning supplies - Method sprays, microfiber cloths, Dawn dish soap, baking soda, microfiber mop
appliance filters
touch up cabinet paint
Clear
Even though I did this in the spring, all the drawers need to be organized and decluttered. Some that get heavy use need to be vacuumed and wiped free of crumbs.
Clean

I'll do a heavier version of my normal weekly cleaning of the kitchen. So, beyond wiping down all the surfaces, I'm going to clean the bottom of the oven with a paste of baking soda and Dawn and let that sit for a few hours to clear the grease away. I'll move all the appliances and wipe each of them down, and I'll clean out the refrigerator, wiping each shelf and drawer. Then, I will use my microfiber mop to get the wood floors clean.
Repairs
Twice a year, I touch up a half dozen chips in our cabinet paint. This has lasted over 10 years now, and they still look great. The wear is around the handles of our most heavily used doors, so it's to be expected. I'll probably need to go around and tighten a few knobs as well.
I have a few things on my list to prepare for holiday cooking, so check back in two weeks.
