Tuesday Morning Tidy: New Year, Clean Floors

Today's Tidy tip is to consider a robot vacuum for your home. This likely sounds like old news, but I did not hear great things about the early models. Things have changed. About six months ago, one of my favorite home design bloggers, Young House Love, was sharing the virtues of their eufy robot vacuum. They were joined by legions of other eufy fans, and I started paying attention.

Around this time, I was looking for a cleaning service and coming up with only outrageously high quotes. Since I actually don't mind cleaning (I'd take it any day over grocery shopping!), it just didn't seem like a worthwhile expense. But I was looking for ways to streamline cleaning and keeping on top of dust and dirt.

For the reasonable price of less than one cleaning service visit, I took the plunge and ordered the eufy BOOST IQ slim. I charged it and had it cleaning on the first day! I knew to expect very full cartridges for the first few weeks of daily cleaning, and indeed this was true! These days, however, we run it just 2-3 times per week, and it really keeps our wood floors free of debris and dust bunnies! When I walk around barefoot, I feel clean floors rather than crumbs and other unknowns...

I've had a few, though minor, issues with the robot vacuum.

  1. There's a corner of our family room with a lot of cords underneath a large chair, and she (yes--her name is Rosie after The Jetsons) often spent too much time bouncing around under there and occasionally tried to drag a cord out. We strategically placed an old throw pillow where it cannot be seen, and it provides a barricade.

  2. She did not do well with Christmas tree skirts (but rugs are fine). We had to run our regular vacuum during the holidays.

  3. The model we have does not handle our bedrooms upstairs. The carpeting is fairly plush and several beds have bed skirts. Both of these caused problems. I imagine there are models out there who could navigate carpeting much better than this one.

This eufy does not bang-up baseboards, vacuums up just about everything it comes across and is easy to empty and maintain. Right now, there's a $100 coupon, making it worth a try if you're looking for this kind of solution.
