I actually had a different room initially set for August, but back to school got me rethinking things! Thus, my Clear, Clean and Repair was focused on our Laundry Room/Mud Room.

  1. Clear, clean and repair. Identify any materials needed in advance to make this possible.

  2. Assess how we use the space for making improvements.

  3. Identify ways to maintain it more easily going forward.

The laundry room is right off our garage, so it's probably the most high-traffic area outside of the kitchen. It houses laundry, shoes, coats, swim gear, and some sports equipment. We also store extra snacks in the closet and backpacks on hooks.

I'll need just a handful of supplies for sprucing up the space:

  • door paint

  • microfiber mop

  • trash bags

  • cleaning spray and wipes

  • vacuum

Clear

I must have missed a few seasons of clearing this space out, because I found kids' shoes so small, they could only be described as "cute." There were lots of cloth masks that we abandoned months into the pandemic for more effective disposables, and there were a few coats with broken zippers. All of these items had to go! I put an excessive number of drawstring bags and old backpacks into the donation pile, alongside a handful of too-small coats.

Clean

I love my long runner that stretches well into the space keeping water and snow off our wood floors. But it needed a good wash! Fortunately, after a few cycles in the machine and a quick mop of the floors beneath, it was ready to go back to work. I still need to wipe down the washer and dryer surfaces and vacuum out the shoe cubbies and closet.

Repairs

The door to the garage needs a fresh coat of paint from years of opening and closing, but there are no other repairs needed for this space! It holds up well to our daily use.

In two weeks, I'll be back to share a few organizational updates that make this small space continue to work hard for our family.
